Dramatis Personae

"Western" naming conventions have changed a bit since the twentieth century. The tradition is now for a child to take one parent's (usually the father) surname, and to attach the other parent's surname to the end of the given name with a hyphen. Thus the complete, formal name would be something like "John-Smith Maxim Doe," but informally the man would still be known as "John Doe."
The middle name is still optional, but most people choose it to be something they find meaningful. Married couples often take a common middle name after wedding.
